Tempe, AZ - Monday is America Recycles Day, and Waste Management is using it as an excuse to have some fun and teach consumers at the same time.
The company is quizzing shoppers at Tempe Marketplace from 11a.m. – 2 p.m. to determine how much they know about recycling.
Answer correctly and you could win prizes like backpacks, reusable bags and lunch totes.
Carrie Galvan is the recycling director with Waste Management, and says there are some common recycling mistakes people make.
Toilet paper (the cardboard tube is a yes)
Containers with food or food remnants still in them (rinse before you recycle)
The plastic bag inside the cereal box (the box is okay, just remove the bag first)
Galvan says 75 percent of trash in landfills could have been recycled.
She also tells us the average family tosses away 2,000 pounds of trash a year.
She says think before you toss, because a plastic bottle will take a million years to decompose and styrofoam will never will.
