TEMPE, AZ - The mother of an ASU student who died after being dragged behind a car during a robbery made a plea to the public to find her daughter's killer.
"At 8:55 last night I died when she did," said Karen Montenegro at a news conference last Thursday afternoon.
Montenegro's daughter, 21-year old Kyleigh Sousa, died from injuries she suffered when police say a man in a car grabbed her purse and sped off. It happened on the morning of May 26th, outside an IHOP restaurant at Apache and College in Tempe.
"Someone just got hit by a car in the parking lot," said one bystander as he spoke with 911 operators.
The emergency calls were released by police as they continue to search for the people responsible for Sousa's death.
The recordings reveal a chaotic scene as frantic witnesses try to save the 21-year-old's life.
"Get paramedics over here now," said one unidentified man in the recordings. "This girl is dying, dying," said the man while trying to help her.
Sousa later died after her family flew in from New Jersey.
Her organs were donated.
"When I walked in the room I couldn't recognize my own daughter," said Montenegro tearfully. "I just wanted her to sit up and say 'Hi Mommy' like she always does. But she is never going to wake up."
Police describe the suspect in the car as a heavy set Hispanic man. They believe he was not alone in the car. Police are looking for a silver Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, or Dodge Charger that witnesses described.
"The person or persons who perpetrated this crime are absolute cowards, " said Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman, at a press conference with Kyleigh's family.
Kyleigh's mother is only hopeful that someone will come forward.
"Turn yourself in and do right by me," she said. "I will try to find it in my heart to forgive you."
Investigators continue to search for a silver Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, or Dodge Charger.
