SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ - A serious vehicle accident has closed a busy San Tan Valley road, according to authorities.

According to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, a female and male in separate vehicles were injured in the accident at Gary Road near Hunt Highway.

Pete Zick with Rural Metro Fire Department said this was a head-on collision. He said one of the vehicles, a van, rolled over, ejecting the patient who is in critical condition. The sheriff's office said the man's injuries are possibly life-threatening.

Sheriff's officials say the woman admitted to being intoxicated.

Both patients were air-lifted to a Scottsdale hospital, according to sheriff's spokesman Elias Johnson.

Johnson said the crash has shut down the road in both directions with no estimate on when it will re-open.

The accident is under investigation.
