MESA, AZ - The 911 call made by a Mesa woman's daughter after acid was thrown on her were released Thursday.
Derri Velarde's daughter made the call for help earlier this month after her mom ran into the apartment covered in acid.
"Somebody just threw acid on my mom," said Velarde's daughter to a 911 operator. "She (Velarde) just pulled out of the car, she just got home from work and somebody threw acid on her."
At one point during the nearly nine-minute recording, Derri Velarde can be heard screaming that her skin is burning.
"What do I do?" asked Velarde's daughter. "She has acid all over her body, I can already see her skin like lighter and darker."
Police have released a sketch of a woman suspected of throwing the acid on Velarde.
The 41-year-old victim arrived at her home in the area of Southern Avenue and Val Vista Drive.
As she was getting out of her vehicle in the southwest parking lot, a woman approached her and threw acid on her before running northbound on foot through the complex.
The victim's son said his mother ran inside with acid dripping from her body.
"I was like acid? It didn't really make sense at first," said Joseph Velarde.
The 41-year old married mother of five left a trail of acid as she ran for help.
At her apartment, a portion of the front door and the front door handle is discolored from the acid.
"She (Derri) ran inside and to the kitchen sink where you can see the acid tarnished the sink and a part of the paint on the cabinet is stripped off," said Joseph while sitting in the family's living room.
Joseph said skin on his mom's shoulder fell off as well as a result of the acid.
"Her bra actually stuck to her skin as she was trying to take it off, " said Joseph. "The worst part is mostly right here (shoulder) and her face is doing good, her face is covered with some type of ointment in the hospital."
The victim was transported to Maricopa County Medical Center with level two burns to her face and chest area.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic female between 30 and 40 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 140 pounds, black shoulder-length hair in a ponytail, and has wide hips, according to detectives.
The suspect was reportedly wearing a black tank top and black sweatpants with a white stripe.
"She (suspect) I guess wanted to look like a jogger or something, because she was wearing a jogging suit I guess and after she threw the acid on my mom she jogged away so nobody would notice," said Joseph.
Based on the investigation, Melendez said it appears this is not a random act.
Joseph also believes his mom was targeted, but won't say exactly why.
"I believe my mom was set up, this was pre-meditated, it was thought out for a while and I think about jealously."
Detectives are currently following up on leads.
Derri Velarde has been released from the Maricopa County Medical Center with burns to the left side of her face, neck and shoulder.
