MESA, AZ - A 14-year-old girl police say was sexually assaulted at Mesa's Fitch Park on Monday by a 14-year-old boy she knew, remains hospitalized but is recovering from her wounds.
The boy and girl both were "highly intoxicated" when police arrived on the scene about 4 p.m. Monday and found a broken bottle of alcohol and the girl lying on the grass after the boy placed her there, according to Sgt. Anthony Landato, a Mesa police spokesman.
A Valley Metro bus driver discovered the partially dressed girl with blood on her face and groin area as the boy was wiping up blood from the restroom floor at Fitch Park.
The boy was trying to walk away, but police arrested him on one count of sexual assault and one count of aggravated assault, Landato said.
The boy admitted to having sexual contact with the girl, but not to the extent of the girl's injuries, which were severe, Landato said.
The girl had no recollection of what happened after they drank the alcohol, and it was not immediately known if the pair was skipping school.
It will be up to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office whether to charge the boy as an adult.
Landato said that since this was not a stranger attack, police do not believe that there is any kind of increased danger at city parks and do not plan to increase patrols at the city's parks.
