MESA, AZ - Police are investigating a homicide in Mesa Thursday after a man was found dead at an apartment complex.
Detective Steve Berry with the Mesa Police Department said officers responded to the scene, near Mesa Drive and Brown Road, after receiving a report of shots fired in the area around 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Police confirmed the man was shot and died at the scene.
Berry said several people came outside after they heard shots fired, but told police they did not hear or see anything.
A neighbor, who identified himself only as David, said he knew the victim. David said he was in his 20s and described him as a "nice" person.
He told ABC15 that his friend had been the victim of two other attempted robberies in the past.
Two other neighbors said the apartment complex, which sits in a cul-de-sac on April Circle, has had a heavy amount of police activity in the past few years.
Bryan Medel showed ABC15 video of a police raid at another apartment across the street. He said in the past three years, he's seen at least three major incidents in the area.
Medel said there's a lot of criminal activity that happens at that complex and he's concerned for his family's safety.
"I have three kids," he said. "This happened outside my daughter's window."
Police are looking for a motive and suspect(s) as of Thursday morning.
