MESA, AZ - Police believe alcohol may be to blame after a man was hit and seriously injured by a minivan Monday night.
Mesa police spokesman Tony Landato said the accident happened around 7:45 p.m. near Gilbert and Broadway Roads.
Landato said police believe the unidentified Hispanic male in his 30s was highly intoxicated when he stepped into the roadway and was hit.
Police said the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Authorities said the minivan driver, a female in her 30s, was not injured and showed no signs of being impaired.
Landato said the investigation is ongoing at this time
The victim's name has not yet been released.
Southbound Gilbert Road was closed for at least an hour while crews worked to clear the scene.
