MESA, AZ - Authorities say a Mesa man is in custody for allegedly forging his name on a $900 church check that was mistakenly sent to him.

Mesa police say a secretary at a Mormon church ward inadvertently mailed the check to 44-year-old Joseph Kelly.

According to court documents, Kelly told police the check was meant for him because he had spent four days helping another family in the church move and they didn't pay him.

The Arizona Republic says Kelly told police that he had received a letter from the church telling him he cashed a forged check, but he didn't follow up.

Kelly was arrested on suspicion of forgery. It was unclear Wednesday whether he has legal representation yet.
