MESA, AZ - A 16-year-old girl has been arrested and booked into jail after she allegedly abandoned her newborn baby in a shed on Sunday.
The teen, who has not been identified by authorities due to her age, faces charges of attempted murder and child abuse.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found the infant in a shed attached to the home of the 16-year-old.
Deputies believe the suspect tossed the baby out a window, causing the baby to suffer a skull fracture.
Deputies were called to the home late Sunday to check on an injured person. They reportedly found the 16-year-old bleeding profusely after giving birth.
She was taken to the hospital and deputies spent about 30 minutes searching for the baby.
When they found the infant, the child was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries where the infant remains.
It was discovered during the sheriff’s office investigation that the suspect secretly gave birth in the family’s bathroom and then threw the newborn out the window, according to authorities.
The child reportedly fell about five feet and hit a brick. The infant is responding well to medical treatment and is expected to survive.
The newborn is in the custody of Child Protective Services.
