MESA, AZ - Mesa Police have charged a 28-year-old suspect in the shooting of a cab driver Friday morning.
Sgt. Tont Landato of the Mesa Police Department said Matthew Howardell has been charged with aggravated assault and as a prohibited possessor after he allegedly shot a cab driver near Rio Solado and Country Club Drive Friday morning.
Howardell is accused of shooting the 46-year-old cab driver shortly after being picked up at a Mesa home, according to police, before fleeing on foot.
The suspect was eventually located and taken into police custody.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition on Friday. As of Sunday morning, Landato said the driver is recovering from his injuries.
Discount Cab said their "thoughts and prayers" are with the driver, in a statement Friday afternoon. The company also said that they are fully cooperating with authorities.
No other details were released.
