MESA, AZ - Fire and heavy smoke erupted at a Mesa apartment complex Monday morning.
Captain Dean Morales with the Mesa Fire Department said the two-alarm fire started on the second floor and ignited the third floor of the Mesa apartment complex near Dobson and Broadway.
Officials said 16 units were burned during the blaze and six of them are considered a total loss.
Resident Mat Tracy said at first he thought it was a drill.
"I thought it was a fire drill, but when I came out, smoke was pouring into the hallway," he said. "I immediately got my family out and then stated knocking on the neighbor's door. Everybody was in survival mode."
Crews first arrived to heavy smoke and were forced to evacuate nearby apartment units.
Morales said 80 firefighters and 18 units were called to the fire.
No one was injured in the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
