MESA, AZ - A 1-year-old boy is lucky to be alive after nearly drowning in a backyard pool Monday afternoon.

Mesa Fire Department spokesman Forest Smith said the toddler got out to the pool through a sliding glass door at the family's home near Southern and Extension in Mesa.

Officials said the boy's mother was at home with her kids when the accident happened.

Crews found the boy at the bottom of the pool. The toddler was reportedly under water for two to five minutes before anyone found him.

Firefighters said there was no pool fence and the pool was green.

Smith said the child was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
