MESA, AZ - A Mesa man is behind bars after police say he tried to assault his roommate with a sledgehammer Monday night.
Police spokesman Tony Landato said officers received a 911 call around 10:20 p.m. from a man at a home near 56th Street and Broadway claiming he was locked in a bedroom after his roommate tried to assault him with a sledgehammer following an argument.
Landato said while officers were on their way to the home, Jeffrey West, 37, began smashing the bedroom door with the hammer, and could be heard on 911 yelling that he was going to kill his roommate.
When officers arrived, they saw West sitting in the living room, and the roommate was able to climb out of the bedroom window to safety.
Police tried to talk to West, but he just shouted profanities and refused to leave the home despite police commands. SWAT responded a short time later, and West was eventually taken from the home.
West was later booked for aggravated assault, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.
