Mesa PD: Amy Evers caught stealing 75 cents for soda

MESA, AZ - A woman's need for a soda fix landed her behind bars after police caught her breaking into cars looking for money.

According to a police report, early Monday morning, a Mesa police officer was driving through an apartment complex near 8th Street and Brown when he saw Amy Evers, 33, walking away from a parked vehicle.

When Evers passed by the officer, he asked her what she was doing and she said she "saw the van's door was open so she closed it." She also told the officer she noticed another car door open and she closed that one too.

The officer noticed Evers was acting nervous and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

When the officer asked Evers if she had anything on her he should know about, she emptied her front shirt pocket which contained four small tools.

The officer searched Evers' purse and found drug paraphernalia, a wallet containing two identification cards and a CD case.

Police were able to find the owner of one of the cars who said the tools, the wallet with the identification cards and the CD case were his. He told police he wanted to pursue charges against Evers.

According to the police report, Evers admitted to police she burglarized vehicles in the past, but said she has not since she was a teenager.

She told police she was looking in the cars for 75 cents to get a soda from the apartment complex vending machine.

Evers was booked on suspicion of burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia.
