MESA, AZ - Friends and family of 22-year-old Lacey Gruntorad gathered outside the Starbucks on Power Road in Mesa Friday night as they said goodbye to a dear friend.
Lacey was killed last week, when an 86-year-old woman, drove into her classroom at the Pima Medical Institute where she was studying to be a massage therapist.
More than 200 people lit candles and sang Lacey’s favorite songs by Adele. They still can’t believe that she’s gone and are still wondering why it happened.
One friend who has known Lacey since junior high, says they were blessed by the turnout and had one word to describe her; love. "We should always show love and compassion,” said Ivanca Fox. “And that's all she did."
Another friend of Lacey's is organizing a celebration of life fundraiser.
The event will be held at the Dairy Queen on Higley and Baseline roads in Gilbert on October 9 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Fifteen percent of the proceeds will go to Lacey's family and donations will also be accepted.
