GILBERT, AZ - The United States Post Office is investigating Wednesday night whether someone stole $6 worth of postage in Gilbert.
It might not sound like much, but postage theft is considered a federal offense.
Larry Compton tells ABC15 he went to the USPS branch location near Val Vista and Elliot on December 10th to mail some Christmas presents.
Compton says he purchased a postage sticker from a self-service kiosk but when the package arrived at its destination in California, the postage was missing.
"My friend called the day after Christmas to say the package came postage due," said Compton.
Compton says it appeared someone removed the postage sticker from the box with a razor blade.
He immediately filed a complaint with the USPS.
"I just wanted them to know," said Compton. "Is this an isolated case or is it happening to other people?"
The Inspector General's office is investigating Compton's claims.
A spokesperson tells ABC15 it appears to be an isolated incident.
"People need to know 'is this a scam,'" said Compton.
