GILBERT, AZ - The Town of Gilbert has installed a new type of left-turn signal that’s expected to make an intersection safer and reduce the number of left-turn collisions.
The signal is located at San Tran Village Parkway and Loop 202 interchange.
Known as the flashing yellow arrow, the signal uses a system of red, yellow and green arrows stacked on top of one another. A flashing yellow arrow means the driver is allowed to turn left, but has to yield to oncoming traffic.
Gilbert officials say the flashing yellow signal was adopted by the Federal Highway Administration after nation-wide research showed that the turn signal increases driver awareness.
Gilbert will monitor the success of the new signal before deciding whether to place more of them in other intersections in the town.
