Donations pour in to help Hannah, dog found at side of road

GILBERT, AZ - Hannah, the medium-sized dog rescued by a Gilbert police officer, has received enough funds to cover her surgery to repair her fractured pelvis and her displaced hip and is recovering from her operation.

"She's doing extremely well," said Kim Kelly, the officer who rescued Hannah from the side of the road.

Donations for Hannah streamed in from all over East Valley and around the world, including donations from Switzerland and England, Kelley said. Within days there were enough funds to cover the costs of her surgery.

The dog was rescued Sept. 25 when Kelly was returning to Gilbert from Scottsdale. She saw a dog by the side of the road and when she pulled over to stop Hannah was unable to walk toward her.

"I approached and she took a couple of steps forward and then fell into a sitting position," Kelly said.

The surgery on Monday placed seven screws and a metal plate on Hannah's pelvis and relocated her hip.

Hannah, a possible Shar Pei mix, is expected to make a full recovery, but there are still a number of hurdles for her to overcome.

"She can stand up on her own, but she can't walk yet," Kelly said.

When Kelly found Hannah, she was sitting on a red ant hill, with ants swarming over and biting her. After getting Hannah to a veterinarian, Kelly learned that the dog had a fractured pelvis, a dislocated hip, eye problems, multiple lacerations and red ant bites. In addition, she was malnourished and dehydrated.

Now, Hannah must begin the tough road to recovery, Kelly said. But she's beginning to eat.

"I brought her boiled chicken and she ate it right away," Kelly said.

Next week she'll be spayed and in the next few weeks, Hannah will be ready to find foster or new home, Kelly said.
And she's still the sweet dog who didn't bite or whine when she was found on the side of the road.
