GILBERT, AZ - A Phoenix police officer is on desk duty after being accused of leaving the scene of an accident.

Early Saturday morning, police were called to a neighborhood near Anderson Lane and Sexton Street in Gilbert after a driver lost control of his car crashing it into a guard rail.

Police said they believe the driver of that car was Usiel Molina, a Phoenix police officer.

Officers said they believe Molina was speeding through the neighborhood when he lost control of the car.

Police said Molina abandoned the car and was spotted by police walking nearby.

Police said Molina smelled of alcohol and was slurring his words.

They said he denied being the driver, blaming his friend for the accident. Police found out later he was lying.

Molina has been with Phoenix Police Department for five years. He was off-duty at the time of the accident.

Gilbert police said they can’t charge Molina with DUI because he left the crash scene.
