CHANDER, AZ - Students and staff at Chandler's Basha High School are still in shock after hearing what happened to science teacher Amy Kiefer-Berard Wednesday morning.
Kiefer-Berard, husband Daniel, and their 4-week-old baby girl were all struck by a vehicle while walking their dog in Tempe.
The school told ABC15 she suffered three skull fractures.
Biology teacher Mike Davitt said, "She's just so energetic, she has the best sense of humor, she's a hard worker, we just love her."
While she fought back the tears, chemistry teacher Charina Decaro said, "She's just a free-spirited person."
It was a quiet morning at Basha High School and students and staff just tried to get through the day.
The absence of Mrs. Kiefer-Berard was felt more than ever.
"All we can do is do our best and stay positive and just hope and pray that Amy and the baby will pull through," said Davitt.
"She's exhibiting some very good signs, she's reacting to things like light so there are some positives," Davitt said.
Kiefer-Berard had been out on maternity leave and was loving every minute of motherhood, but still missing her students.
"She's wanted her baby for so long and we are so happy for her, but even then she keeps coming back and picks up work because she doesn't want to be far away from her kids," Decaro said.
Kiefer-Berard's favorite quote is posted on a bulletin board in the school's hallway.
It reads "Omnia Transeunt" which means this too shall pass.
Students, colleagues and friends at the school are still anticipating her return and that this too will pass.
"That's one thing that I know about Amy, that she is a fighter," Decaro said.
Decaro said the four week old is crying and eating and doing better than expected and that Daniel is going to be OK.
