CHANDLER, AZ - A Chandler teacher who suffered three skull fractures after being struck by a vehicle three weeks ago is making progress in her recovery, her employer said.

Amy Kiefer-Berard, a science teacher at Chandler’s Basha High School, was hit in Tempe on Sept. 5 while taking a walk with her family, including husband Daniel and their then 4-week-old baby girl. Keifer-Berard was out on maternity leave at the time.

Basha principal Ken James said Kiefer-Berard has been moved to a rehabilitation center, where the staff is helping her to walk and communicate again.

“They had her walking six to eight feet with help,” James said on Monday. “(Her husband) said the baby is doing well.”

There is still a long road ahead for Kiefer-Berard, who has been at Basha for seven or eight years, James said. She is unable to speak, but is able to recognize people.

Tempe Police spokeswoman Molly Enright said the accident, which took place at All America Way and Guadalupe Road, is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Basha High School plans to hold a rally to offer Kiefer-Berard support and well wishes 6 p.m. Sept. 26 at the school, 5990 S. Val Vista Drive, Chandler.

James said the school’s musical students will perform and staff has invited Kiefer-Berard's mom and husband to the event. The school staff will videotape the event for Kiefer-Berard, James said.
