CHANDLER, AZ - When Josh Maule needs eggs, he just heads to his backyard, but that convenience may soon be gone for some who live in the Valley.
The central Phoenix resident keeps eight chickens in a coop.
“We find that having some control over what we eat makes a huge difference,” he said. “The eggs taste a lot better than the ones you get in the store.”
The desire for fresh food is growing among people in the Valley. Wednesday night, the Chandler Planning and Zoning Commission held a public hearing to gather input on whether residents should be allowed to raise chickens in single family lots.
In Phoenix, residents are required to get their neighbors' permission or keep chickens at least 80 feet away from houses.
Maule says his coop is “at the farthest point from our house, which is also the farthest point from our neighbor’s house.”
When his chickens no longer lay eggs, Maul says they use them for soup.
“It’s a great learning experience for our kids about the life cycle and where food comes from.”
Chandler City Council members are expected to take up the issue later this month.
