CHANDLER, AZ - Man's best friend may have a new way to be a hero.
It’s the never ending story in the medical field: not enough blood donations.
"We're actually looking to develop a core rotation of blood donors,” says Dr. Travis Wodiske.
“It's been a major issue, and so that's causing us to have to wait for blood products, and in many emergency type cases, we don't have the luxury of waiting,” he says
Wodiske is hoping to solve this problem when his clinic opens their new blood bank next month.
“There are literally hundreds and thousands of dogs every year, just here in Phoenix, that need blood transfusions. They have diseases that require them to have blood transfusions to help them survive,” says Wodiske.
Yes, man's best friend needs blood donations too. That's why Family VetCare in Chandler will become the first blood bank for dogs in the Valley.
“What we're really trying to do is make a concerted effort to get out in the community and find some dogs that could be heroes, literally, that could donate blood and save hundreds and thousands of lives a year,” says Wodiske.
Erin Frawley is hoping her dog, Rigel, will be one of those heroes. She brought him to the clinic to have his blood tested, hoping that he can give back and help his fellow canines.
“I have been in that situation myself, with a cat who needed four blood transfusions, and without the help of somebody donating, like I hope Rigel can, she never would have made it,” says Frawley. “So, if he has a chance to help save a life, it's a win-win situation.”
Family VetCare of Chandler, located at 5995 W. Chandler Boulevard, will be hosting a blood typing clinic on September 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Potential blood donors need to be happy and healthy dogs, greater than 50 lbs., between the ages of 1-7, and able to make at least a two-year commitment.
Breeds with the higher likelihood of being universal donors: Greyhounds, Boxers, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Irish Wolfhounds, and mixed breed dogs.
