Rescuers get Forest Service volunteer out of Superstitions

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ - Sheriff's deputies have located a 72-year-old man who activated an emergency GPS while working in the Superstition Mountains Wednesday.

Maricopa County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Jones said a volunteer Forest Service worker was out testing water in the area of the First Water Trailhead when he activated his Spot GPS.

The Spot GPS company contacted authorities and approximately a dozen people set out to find the man.

Around 3:15 p.m. Air15 video showed rescuers walking with the victim and stopping in the shade of a tree to rest. It appeared there were paramedics with the group.

The man, wearing a blue shirt and floppy hat, was seen being supported by two rescuers as they walked out of the area. They stopped often to rest.

The victim was walked to a waiting MCSO helicopter and airlifted off the trail to the trailhead where an ambulance waited.

There was immediate no word on how long the man had been out there, or why he called for help.
