PHOENIX - Police say five men armed with handguns got quite a surprise when they attempted to rob a Phoenix jewelry story Saturday.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department said shortly before noon, the five men entered the store near 48th Street and Ray Road with the intent to rob it.
At the time, there were nine people in the store including customers and employees. During the robbery, several victims jumped the suspects and a fight ensued. Police said the robbers tried to tie up the victims, but were unsuccessful.
Thompson said the suspects were scared off and fled the scene empty handed.
One of the victims was an older man who suffered abrasions to his face and a broken tooth.
The suspects are described as five black males wearing dark clothing, beanies, bandanas, and masks.
Detectives are working to obtain more information about the suspects, including a description of their vehicles.
Police said there are no photos or video of the suspects at this time.
