PHOENIX - One man is dead and another was injured in a shooting in South Phoenix Friday.

The shooting took place around 3:15 a.m. near 21st Street and Broadway Road.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said two people were in a vehicle outside a home and several others were in the yard when a black vehicle drove up and someone inside opened fire.

Michael Anthony Thomas, 43, was in the vehicle and was struck several times. A 20-year-old man standing nearby was also hit.

Both were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Thompson said Thomas died, and the younger man is expected to survive his injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

"If we can determine why they were targeted that would answer a lot of questions and maybe even help solve the crime," Thompson said.
