PHOENIX - Police say an "officer-involved shooting" occurred after a driver fired shots from his vehicle in a south Phoenix neighborhood Thursday morning.
According to Sgt. Trent Crump with the Phoenix Police Department, the unidentified suspect was firing shots out of a gray vehicle around 8 a.m. near 14th Street and Winston Drive.
The driver of an SUV nearby was startled by the incident and drove into a tree, Crump said. He said she suffered minor injuries but it was not known if they were from gunfire or flying glass.
A homeowner also called police to say a suspect was trying to break into a vehicle, Crump said.
Crump said the officers approached the suspect in vehicle who grabbed one of the officers' weapons, described as a "long gun."
Crump said during the struggle over the weapon the gun fired. It was not clear if it was fired intentionally or accidentally.
Crump said the suspect surrendered after the shot was fired. He was not hurt.
He added that there rounds had also been fired into the vehicle the suspect was trying to break into.
No officers were injured during the incident.
