PHOENIX - Police say an unborn child has been killed in a car crash in Phoenix.

The accident happened Monday night at 7th Street and Southern Avenue.

Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said in a Tuesday morning email that a Honda minivan was westbound on Southern Avenue attempting to make a left turn to go south onto 7th Street and collided with a Saturn that was eastbound on Southern Avenue.

The Saturn then hit a Dodge pickup truck that was stopped in the intersection.

Crump said the driver of the minivan accelerated after impact and ended up in a vacant field on the northwest corner of the intersection.

Crump said the driver of the Saturn was 35 weeks pregnant and was not wearing a seatbelt. She was transported, along with her passenger, to a nearby hospital. The unborn child died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the minivan was also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Crump said two 10-year-old passengers in the vehicle were restrained and not injured.

The driver of the Dodge was not injured.

Crump said impairment does not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
