PHOENIX - Thanks to the kindness of a Phoenix police officer, a Valley teen has a new way to get around.
Sgt. Natalie Simonick was patrolling her area in North Phoenix around 11 p.m. in early March when she saw a young man she thought might be violating curfew.
She stopped to talk with him and learned that 18-year-old Christian Felix had been at a friend’s house and missed the last bus home.
Simonick gave Felix a ride to his home near 27th Avenue and Deer Valley Road and on the way learned he was on foot because he did not own a bicycle.
In fact Felix had never learned to ride a bike and was traveling over six miles to his job at McDonald’s.
Simonick said at a Thursday press conference that she was impressed with the teen’s work ethic, initiative and character.
Simonick said she talked to her husband and they decided to help out by offering Felix a bicycle.
Squad members taught the teen to ride the bike in the parking lot of the precinct and the Traffic Bureau donated a helmet.
Felix said it was just a matter of bad luck turning into good luck.
“It’s really something when someone comes up on the street and offers to do a kindness for you,” he said. “These days you don’t see anything like that.”
Felix’s mother, Jessica Muniz, said the act of kindness moved her to tears.
