PHOENIX - Phoenix police say an abandoned baby was left in the front yard of a Phoenix home Tuesday afternoon.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson, of the Phoenix Police Department, said the resident returned to her home near 7th Avenue and Greenway Parkway and found the newborn baby girl wrapped in a blanket near the front door.

According to police, the baby appeared to have been born within hours of being found.

The little girl still had her umbilical cord attached and had afterbirth on her body, Thompson said.

The baby was transported to a local hospital by the Phoenix Fire Department.

She was awake and conscious at the time she was transported and is believed to be doing well, a fire official said.

The detectives investigating the case have named the little girl 'Baby Kathleen', since that is where she was found.

Police are still trying to locate the mother.

They received information from several witnesses in the area who saw a young woman walking around the area where the baby was found, as well as near a local elementary school in the area who was described as being "very pregnant" and appeared to be in "distress."

The woman is being described as a hispanic female, 17-24-years-old, 5"3", slender, dark hair in a ponytail, white spaghetti strap shirt, blue or gray pants, with a noticeable tattoo on her right bicep area that could possibly be a red floral design.

According to police,  the woman appeared pregnant and in distress.

If anyone knows who this woman is or who Baby Kathleen's mother may be, they are encouraged to call the Phoenix Police Department Violent Crimes Bureau at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS, 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.

Detectives are concerned for the health of the mother as well.

Phoenix fire officials say the incident serves as a reminder for the public about the use of Safe Havens. You can drop babies off at any fire station, police station, or hospital within 72 hours, no questions asked.
