PHOENIX - Phoenix police and several other agencies were involved in a gang bust at an apartment complex near 25th Avenue and Ocotillo Road.
Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos tweeted out that a joint operation happened with Phoenix police, FBI, ATF, DPS, and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office.
Martos said the operation is a result of a year long investigation into a gang that has taken over the apartment complex and the surrounding community.
According to Martos, the gang was intimidating residents and doing other gang activities.
The agencies on scene were looking for 29 individuals. They were able to locate nine individuals and they were taken into custody and booked, Martos said.
Detectives seized illegal drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and Oxycodone, Martos said, as well as weapons, money and three vehicles because of the search warrants.
Police found five other people, not part of the 29 they were searching for, that were taken into custody for other violations.
Air15 flew over the scene and showed several people in handcuffs sitting on the sidewalk in front of the apartment complex.
"There is hope," said Mary Radil who rents an apartment across the street. She and her friend Yolanda Diaz live no where near the neighborhood but rented the apartment to be able to provide meals for the kids who live there and even run a small preschool.
"There is yellow tape, fights and weapons sometimes being unloaded right in front of 3 and 4-year olds," she said. The pair came to this neighborhood while working with Church on the Street ministries. Ever since they made it their mission to try to make a difference.
"The kids need help," said Radil.
They call it the Lots of Love Center and run on donations. They can be contacted at 602-318-7745.
Radil and Diaz know the bust is only the first layer in ending crime and bringing stability for the kids living in the neighborhood.
They said they will continue to do what they can for as long as they can.
"God called us here," said Diaz.
Martos also said that another location was busted in North Phoenix that was connected to this gang.
Police are still looking for other suspects at this time.
