PHOENIX - A woman was killed Thursday after a crash and car fire on the Loop 101 in north Phoenix.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Carrick Cook said a red Mazda backing up on the freeway caused the accident around 2 p.m.

Cook said the Mazda caught on fire after being struck by other cars and the female driver died on scene.

Officials said they do not know why the woman was backing up on the busy freeway.

Two other vehicles were involved in the crash, including a white BMW which also caught on fire.

According to the Associated Press, the people in the other vehicles weren't injured in the crash.

The Loop 101-Pima eastbound lanes were closed at 56th Street for almost five hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

The identity of the female driver killed in the crash has not yet been released.
