PHOENIX - A murder-suicide that took the lives of a 10-month-old child’s parents has neighbors saying there were warning signs that went ignored.
Phoenix police responded to the family's home around 6 p.m. Wednesday near 77th Avenue and Highland regarding a call of unknown trouble, according to Sgt. Steve Martos.
The caller was the 60-year-old mother of the woman who she found dead, Martos said.
She found her 10-month-old granddaughter crying by her mother’s side, he said.
The caller took the baby and dialed 911. The child was not hurt.
The deceased woman has been identified as 24-year-old Marilyn Guerra, and the deceased male was Dylan Bell who was in his mid-20s, Martos said.
Police say one of the most unfortunate parts about the apparent murder-suicide is that neighbors knew Bell and Guerra were having troubles. When ABC15 talked with neighbors, none of them seemed surprised about the extreme violence.
Neighbors said they always heard Bell and Guerra fighting at their home. Some even suspected it was just a matter of time before something horrible like this shooting happened, but no one did anything about it.
Investigators say Bell's family knew he had a gun and might have been unstable.
ABC15 talked with the La Frontera: Empact Suicide Prevention Center about the warning signs Bell's family may not have taken seriously enough.
“There's a couple of risk factors,” Crisis Director Rodrigo Olivares said. “One, he had a weapon. Two, they knew something was wrong, and that's definitely red flags. There might be a mental health crisis happening as well that others may not be aware of."
Investigators are continuing to work on the case to determine exactly what led up to the violence.
The 10-month-old baby girl is being cared for by her grandmother.
If you're concerned someone you know might be unstable, experts say you should get them help.
La Frontera Arizona and the Crisis Response Network are good resources for those in need of support.
