PHOENIX - A man is in the hospital after stabbing his wife at a north Phoenix home Friday night.
Crews responded to the residence near Cave Creek Road and Greenway Parkway around 8 p.m.
Police at the scene said the couple got into an altercation at the home and the man began assaulting his wife, 41-year-old Maria Gonzalez.
Three of the couple's children, in addition to five of Gonzalez's children from previous relationships, were at the residence at the time. Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said some of the children attempted to stop the suspect as he assaulted his wife, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
During the assault, the man drew a knife and stabbed Gonzalez. Martos said when police arrived on scene the woman was found collapsed outside the home.
Gonzalez was transported to a local hospital where she died.
The man was also injured in the incident, but it is unclear how his injuries were sustained.
He is in serious condition at a Valley hospital.
The children were not injured.
It is unclear what caused the couple's initial altercation.
An investigation is under way.
