PHOENIX - A Phoenix man is accused of abusing and killing his elderly mother.
After a 21-month investigation, a grand jury felt they had enough evidence to charge 57-year-old Gregory Nieciecki with vulnerable adult abuse, domestic violence and negligent homicide.
Investigators said the investigation dates back to the October 2010 death of Stella Nieciecki, Gregory's mother who was 90 years old at the time.
Stella Nieciecki was suffering from dementia, and was "malnourished, suffering from sores due to poor hygiene and may have been deceased in the home for several days," said police.
The Phoenix home near Cactus and 36th Street looks abandoned. The paint on the doors is peeling and newspapers are littered in the front yard as if no one has lived there for months.
Next-door neighbor June Wiedow said it's typical.
Wiedow told ABC15 an FBI agent asked her questions about Nieciecki and if anyone had come in and out of the home.
"I said what did he do, and he said something pretty bad," said Wiedow.
"Seeing her and the way she was, I don't doubt that he could have done something like this," Wiedow said of the allegations against her neighbor.
Wiedow had not seen Stella Nieciecki for almost two years. She thought that because of her dementia, she may have been taken to a care facility.
"This is beyond belief to me that anyone could do something so horrendous," she said.
Police said bond for Nieciecki was set at $250,000.
