PHOENIX - It was a perfect storm of parking problems at Piestewa Peak Sunday afternoon.

First, the weather was beautiful.

Second, it's a 3-day weekend for a lot of people with Presidents Day on Monday.

And third, Echo Canyon at Camelback Mountain is closed for repairs.

And to make matters worse, there were three mountain rescues Sunday, with several large fire trucks partially blocking the streets.

That left parking at Piestewa Peak a challenge to say the least.

It didn't take long for frustrated drivers to take matters into their own hands, parking along the roadway.

"We saw the no parking signs, but there were so many cars there we just thought that's what you do," said Jenny who left in a car with a parking ticket on it.

Hikers said there were dozens of cars with tickets on them Sunday.

Each one cost $70 with a $20 discount if you pay early.
