PHOENIX - Two people were critically injured when their vehicle was hit by a wrong-way driver early Monday morning.

The accident happened on Interstate 17 near Dixileta Drive around 3:30 a.m.

Sgt. Paul Forch with the Department of Public Safety said a mother and daughter were in a car when they were struck by a Jeep going the wrong way on the southbound freeway.

Forch said they hit head on in the HOV lane.

The woman and her daughter suffered critical injuries, the driver of the Jeep escaped with relatively minor injuries, Forch said.

The southbound HOV and left lanes were closed for several hours for the investigation.
