PHOENIX - Phoenix officials including Mayor Greg Stanton and new Police Chief Daniel Garcia spoke out at a news conference Monday regarding their reactions to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on Senate Bill 1070.
“Today's Supreme Court decision that much of SB 1070 is unconstitutional is a stark reminder of the need for Congress to act immediately on comprehensive immigration reform," Stanton said. "It also reminds us that our state Legislature should stop focusing on divisive issues and instead spend their time on job creation and smart economic development for the state of Arizona.”
"Regardless of today's decision from the Supreme Court, I believe that the spirit behind SB 1070 doesn't represent the values of the city that I lead. The city I lead and the neighborhood that I grew up in, in west Phoenix, taught me that diversity needs to be celebrated. Diversity is one of the great strengths of this city," Stanton said.
"I believe wholeheartedly in treating people with dignity and respect, which is the ethical foundation of all law enforcement. We will continue with that process. We will continue policing with a purpose," Garcia said.
