PHOENIX - Police are looking for one of the men behind an armed robbery that left two others in critical condition Friday.

“It was like a movie, but it was real surreal,” said Tashanna Wilson, who lives across the street.

Just before dawn, police say three men approached an approximately 50-year-old man while he was going inside to pay for gas at 43rd Avenue and McDowell Road.

They say a fight ensued and a gunshot rang out.

“It happened real fast," Wilson said. “Blood, it was a lot of blood on the floor.”

The bullet hit the victim in the neck, but also apparently hit one of the suspects in the shoulder.

Police say the victim struggled to make his way inside the Quick-Mart for help, and two of the suspects carried their accomplice to the car wash area, left him there and took off in different directions.

“Sadly, it’s not surprising in this neighborhood,” said Athena Kish, who frequents the Shell station where the crime occurred.

Another regular, Robert Lozano, said he avoids the street when he can.

“Where we live at we see the helicopters flying around a lot," he said. “We ain't even trying to come out in the nighttime, because it looks a little ghetto.”

Police caught one of the suspects, but he refuses to cooperate with investigators. Another suspect is in the hospital and can’t talk, and the victim is not in a position to help, either, as he recovers at St. Joseph’s hospital, according to authorities.

The outstanding suspect is only described as either a white or Hispanic male.

Both the victim and the wounded suspect were listed in critical but stable condition Friday afternoon.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what the motive was, and whether the attack was random.

“It makes me watch my back more, but not really,” Kish said. “I hope he gets caught.”

There was another scene not far from this location where three suspects attempted to rob someone of cash at an ATM, according to Phoenix Police Lieutenant Veach.

That victim was able to flee without losing anything, but it is not known if the incidents are connected.
