PHOENIX - It's an extra special Mother's Day for new Valley mom Heather Knies who almost didn't make it this far.
In 2006 she received something of a death sentence -- an aggressive form of brain cancer.
"I just didn't think this was going to kill me and I stayed defiant," Knies said.
She stayed positive, prayed and found one of the best brain surgeons in the world, Dr. Robert Spetzler at St. Joseph's Barrow Neurological Institute.
"These types of cells reproduce rapidly and are very resistant to a cure," Spetzler said.
But after two brain surgeries, Knies is cancer free after six years.
But there was another issue.
After three years of chemotherapy there was a real risk Heather wouldn't be able to have children.
She and her husband decided to try the in vitro fertilization method and it worked. Her baby, Zoe, was born 10 months ago.
"I always wanted to be a mom since I was a child," Knies said. "Going through something like that teaches you how precious life is."
Happy Mother's Day Heather!
