PHOENIX - Valley veterans had a rare chance to experience a memorial built to remember service members killed in the Vietnam War.
“The Moving Wall,” The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, was inspired by Vietnam veteran John Devitt of Stockton, CA who recognized the healing nature of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial and wanted those unable to travel to Washington, D.C. to be able to see and touch the names.
The Moving Wall is a half-size replica of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The display is 46-feet long and 8-feet, 6-inches tall, and also includes a separate panel for service men and women from each state lost in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The mobile replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall was on display at the Phoenix VA Health Care System this week, and was open to the public. Because many Veterans and family members are unable to travel to Washington, DC, to view the actual Memorial, the “Moving Wall” brings the tribute to them. Visitors at the Phoenix display were able to locate names of those they lost in the Vietnam Conflict. Many family members left behind letters, ball gloves, unit coins, service photos, and personal objects belonging to individuals whose names are engraved on the memorial.
Included in the display was a table with place settings for our fallen warriors, POW's and MIA's. The Fallen Warrior Table is displayed at ceremonial functions among military units, recognizing those who are missing from the units' ranks.
