PHOENIX - Altamar Mexican Grill is open for business on Labor Day.
"We're a new business, so we thought we would give it a shot," said Alberto Hernandez, co-owner of the Valley restaurant.
It seemed like a great idea for folks taking the day off.
"It's a day for them relax. So we want to welcome them to our place and let us do the cooking for them,” Hernandez said.
Unfortunately, no one really showed up.
"So far, not that good,” said Hernandez. “We've only had one customer in here and that was a repeat customer that came in this weekend and enjoyed their lunch."
The business at 44th Street and McDowell Road opened in mid-August and foot traffic has been hit-or-miss.
"There's days when you get 25 people walking in the door and then there's days when you get 10 people walking in the door,” said Hernandez.
For a struggling new business, one bad day could be costly.
"You have to have some food cooked and ready to go. You have your salsas, fresh cut lettuce, or fresh cut tomatoes,” said Hernandez. “If all that stuff doesn't get used today, that's a waste.”
Will Altamar be open for next year’s Labor Day?
"Next year? I’d like to be on a beach somewhere,” Hernandez said.
