PHOENIX - Days after the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office conducted a crime sweep over the weekend in southwest Phoenix, officials were still unable to tell how many of those arrested were gang-related.
MCSO has said that 37 people were arrested during the two day operation this past Friday and Saturday. For Maryvale resident Fouid Sharif, the idea of a crime sweep in his neighborhood came as good news.
“If the police pay more attention to my area, I feel safe,” he said. Sharif has lived in Maryvale since 1993 and said his house has been robbed five times.
But Lydia Guzman, a local activist who followed MCSO officers during the sweep in Maryvale, said it appeared like officers were pulling over innocent people at random.
“He was stopping folks who had nothing to do with gangs. They didn’t look like gang members. These are average looking folks that look like me,” she said.
Still, Sharif believed the officers are just doing their job.
“That is their job; to protect me. So I’d love to see them every hour or two to three hours passing by,” he said.
