PHOENIX - Thousands of flights are being canceled preemptively as a major winter storm is set to bear down on the Northeast.

By Thursday night, travelers at Sky Harbor Airport trying to get to the East Coast were pretty much out of luck.

"Our initial flight was canceled," said John Moore who was scheduled on a flight to Boston on Friday. He is being routed through San Francisco.

"We're trying to get on standby for Saturday, but the earliest flight we can get booked on is Monday," he said. "What can you do? It is the weather."

Flights coming into the Valley from the East Coast were pretty much on time Thursday evening.

Even travelers coming and going to West Coast destinations were thankful to not be traveling as the winter storm hits.

"Sometimes it backs everything up," said one woman waiting for a relative.
