PHOENIX - Sheriff's deputies fanned throughout the Valley Saturday to knock on doors in a roundup of parents delinquent in child support.
According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the Father's Day weekend operation is being handled by over 100 deputies and volunteers armed with warrants to arrest the deadbeat dads, and moms.
"I know families are struggling more today than in years past," says Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "But a tough economy is no excuse for a mom or dad to ignore their financial obligations to their children. Kids come first, no matter what."
Deadbeat parent roundups were started by the sheriff in 1998, according to officials. Officials say 33 "deadbeat" parents were arrested during the special operation over Father's Day weekend.
Arpaio says of all the parents with child support warrants, one owes the most at $175,000.
"Operation Dodging Daddies" began at 6 a.m. Saturday and is the 25th operation of its kind since Arpaio took office 18 years ago.
