Umpire saves Chase Field worker Janie Powers with CPR

PHOENIX - It's been about a month since Janie Powers has been back to the ballpark. For awhile, she didn't think she ever would see another pitch.

Janie is an in-seat server, bringing hot-dogs, beers and other eats to your seats. She has been doing it since the Diamondbacks' first game.

Janie suffered an arrythmia episode just before a game on August 20. She told a co-worker she felt dizzy, then collapsed.

"I went into complete cardiac arrest. I was within minutes of dying if it wasn't for Jim Joyce," she said.

Jim Joyce is an umpire who was in the tunnel when Janie collapsed and rushed to her side.

"I remember hearing his voice. I remember him saying, 'Janie, hold on.' And I think that's what kept me going," Powers said.

Joyce performed CPR, keeping Janie alive until paramedics came. She credits Joyce with saving her life and hopes her story can inspire others to make life-saving moves.

"A message that we want to bring home is how important CPR is and will always be," she said.

She may not be a big time ballplayer, but she was warmly welcomed back by her team and says Joyce is her MVP.
