PHOENIX - A Phoenix couple lost their home in an early Tuesday morning fire but made it out OK. Turns out a mishap may have saved their lives.
Firefighters say the elderly couple had checked into a hotel overnight because their air conditioner wasn't working.
While they were away, the fire destroyed their home in the Turf Paradise trailer park near 19th Avenue and Bell Road.
A neighbor called 911 around 4:30 a.m. Several witnesses say they woke up to a bright glow before realizing their neighbors' home was on fire.
"We heard explosions," one neighbor said.
"I'm sad for them," said a little girl who came to check on them with her mother.
The trailer was burned to the ground.
Friends consoled one of the occupants. She was "distraught," a firefighter said.
Those close to the couple say they were told an electrical problem might have sparked the fire. The cause was still under investigation Tuesday morning.
