PHOENIX - Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport announced on Tuesday morning that Spirit Airlines will begin operations at Sky Harbor in October.
Spirit Airlines will offer daily nonstop flights to Dallas/Fort Worth beginning on October 24th. Additional service to Chicago O’Hare and Denver International Airport will begin November 7th.
With this move, Spirit Airlines will discontinue operations at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. The last Spirit Airlines flight out of the airport will be October 23rd.
Spirit Airlines offers customers flights throughout the U.S., Latin American, and the Caribbean.
The airline will move into the north concourse in terminal three of Sky Harbor.
Mesa Gateway’s Executive Director Jane Morris says, “We helped Spirit. We helped them into the market and to understand the market and they were so successful that they're thinking Sky Harbor will help them even better than Gateway.”
Morris says the airport is already working with Allegiant to add other flights.
“We added a Telluride flight this December,” said Morris.
Overall, Spirit only accounted for 8-percent of passenger traffic at Mesa Gateway.
