PHOENIX - A man is dead after he was shot by a Phoenix police officer Thursday morning.

The shooting happened near 13th Street and Campbell Avenue. Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said no officers were injured.

Crump said the incident started with a man in his 50s pacing outside a mental health facility and threatening suicide.

Officers spent about 45 minutes trying to "talk him down," according to Crump.

The man then pointed a gun at the officers and one officer fired his weapon, striking the man.

The man was taken to the hospital where he died.

Police don't know how the man got the weapon.

Crump said the victim was a patient at the assisted care facility for patients with mental illness. He apparently had a history of mental illness and drug abuse.

The officer involved in the shooting is a 15-year veteran, according to Crump.

Police have not yet released the man's identity.
