PHOENIX - A 54-year-old man collapsed and died while hiking on Piestewa Peak in Phoenix.
A retired criminal justice detective was hiking along the Summit Trail with co-workers visiting from New Jersey Sunday morning when he suffered a medical episode and died, according to a Phoenix Fire Department spokesman.
Witnesses surrounded the man and tried to perform CPR until paramedics arrived, according to Phoenix Fire.
The man died at the scene.
Authorities then began a recovery operation to remove the victim's body from the trail.
The victim's name and medical condition were not immediately released.
